Four new character posters were revealed from the upcoming Tom Stoppard (The King’s Speech) adaption of the Broadway musical Les Miserables. The movie and musical were based on French writer Victor Hugo’s epic novel of the same name.
Hugh Jackman is Jean Valjean, a man imprisoned for 19 years after stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister’s starving children. Valjean is paroled and finds he is shunned by society. He encounters Bishop Myriel who shows him mercy and encourages Valjean to turn his life around. Valjean becomes a new man becomes of the mercy shown to him by the bishop.
Russell Crowe is Javert, a fanatic police inspector who recognizes Jean Valjean. He will stop at nothing to reveal the true identity of Jean Valjean who now goes by the name of Monsieur Madeleine.
Anne Hathaway is Fantine, a beautiful working class woman abandoned by her lover and has a small child out-of-wedlock. She pays the Thenardiers to take care of her daughter while she works in Jean Valjean’s (Monsieur Madeleine) factory. She is fired from the factory after a supervisor finds out she is an unwed mother. She sells her hair and finally turns to prostitution so she can continue to send money for her daughter.
Amanda Seyfried is Cosette, Fantine’s daughter who is forced to work for the Thenardiers while under their care. After Fantine’s death, Jean Valjean pays the Thenardiers and adopts Cosette as his daughter.
Les Miserables opens in theaters Christmas Day.
