Penn Badgley of Gossip Girl fame stars in the Jeff Buckley biopic, Greetings from Tim Buckley. The indie film will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. The movie centers on the early days of Jeff Buckley’s life as a struggling musician. The story follows the days leading up to the singer’s 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert in St. Ann’s Church.
Jeff Buckley was a singer-songwriter and guitarist from California. His father was the musician Tim Buckley. In 1997, Buckley died in a drowning accident in Memphis, Tennessee. His unique voice distinguished his music. Jeff Buckley’s life, music and death have inspired other artist and his legacy has informed other musician’s work.
Greetings from Tim Buckley is one of two Jeff Buckley biopics in the works. The other film stars Reeve Carney, star of the production plagued, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark musical. Reeve Carney bears a striking likeness to the acclaimed musician and seems to possess a stronger music background.
Badgley’s casting drew more detractors. Maybe hoping to prove he’s up to the task to portray Jeff Buckley, the actor took to the stage in New York City with Ryan Jarman, lead singer of The Cribs to perform Buckley’s song,Lilac Wine.
Imogen Poots of Fright Night co-stars in Greetings from Tim Buckley. The movie has yet to find a distributor.
