Emmy Nominations Announced: ‘American Horror Story’ and ‘Madmen’ Tied With 17 Noms

Early Thursday morning, Jimmy Kimmel (Jimmy Kimmel Live)  and Kerry Washington (Scandal) announced the 64th Emmy Award nominations from Los Angeles.  Stars from new shows like Showtime Veep and HBO Girls scored nominations for their leads, Lena Dunham and Seinfeld vet, Julie Louis-Dryfus.

HBO leads the networks again with 81 nominations.  CBS comes in second with 60 mentions.  PBS scored 58 nominations mainly due to their  popular drama, Downton Abbey.

The series with the most nominations were American Horror Story and Madmen tying with 17 mentions.  Downton Abbey and the TBS mini-series, Hatfields and McCoys received 16 nominations.  HBO mini-series, Hemingway & Gellhorn received 15 nominations.  Modern Family, Saturday Night Live each received 14 nominations.  AMC Breaking Bad entering its final season received 13 nominations as did PBS Masterpiece Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia and 30 Rock.  HBO shows, Boardwalk Empire and Game Changed received 12 nominations with Game of Thrones receiving 11 nominations.  Showtime’s Homeland scored 9 nominations including two lead actor and actress mentions for stars, Damian Lewis and Claire Danes.

There were some notable snubs this year with dominant shows, consistent actors and actresses failing to get a nomination.  The Office, once a favorite in the comedy series category was excluded this year.  The Good Wife which was nominated for the drama category for the last two years failed to secure a spot this year.  Mireille Enos from The Killing, Laura Linney in The Big C, and Kyra Sedgewick from The Closer have all been nominated in the past but didn’t get a mention this year.  Golden Globe winner, Kelsey Grammer for Stars Boss and perennial favorite, John Slattery from Madmen failed to make in on the lead actor and supporting category list.  John Slattery was bumped in favor of his Madmen co-star, Jared Harris.  With the last season of House  wrapping, star, Hugh Laurie didn’t get recognized for his swan song.  Conan O’Brien, who received three nominations last year for the Tonight Show, didn’t receive any mentions for his new TBS show, Conan.

A list of some of the nominees for the 64th Emmy Awards is below.
